Think of making a batch of chocolate chip cookies. The Recipe is 'chocolate chip cookies.' But if you might find many ways to make them, if you searched cook books. These different ways are called formulas. Oracle let's you define multiple formula's for a recipe to enable you to make the product with different ingredients and processes.

Formulas deal with what and how much of an input item it takes to produce a given quantum of products.
Recipes are nothing but combination of formula and routing (sequence of operations)

Formula consists of ingredients and plan quantities whereas recipes are combination of formula and routing.
