What are sub lots used for?

These identify materials within a lot, for example, I am making a batch of Glue 100 gallons. I put the glue into 1 gallon bottles. THe first bottle I identify with a lot-1, the second bottle lot-2 and so on up to 100. These are the sub lot numbers, I have 100 bottles from this lot. Similar to a serial number in this case.
